Gryphon football training camp
After shooting headshots for the football team on Monday (a whopping 121 people!), I took some action shots of the Gryphon training camp. Between the rain this morning and a miscommunication as to where they would be, I managed to only catch a little of their morning practice and some of their afternoon drills.

When I finally got there, most of the players were taking a break from drills and stretching in preparation for running some plays.

Since they were running plays, there were very few big hits. This is about as close as I got to one and I screwed up the composition!
Most of the hits were more along these lines…
The direction of the sun made it hard to get good backgrounds, but I figured I would exploit the fact that the residences are well known on campus to bring a sense of location to the image.
Really, I was wishing I could get up in the Skyjack with the guys filming the plays, but something tells me the coach would not be fond of me interfering with his recordings.
Every play was run under the watchful eyes of the coaches, who were mainly standing on the field while everyone ran around them.
That concluded my morning and off I went to grab a bite and get some other work done. In the afternoon, the sun had swung around so that I would be facing the forest that runs along the one side of the field. The afternoon was spent shooting a series of drills ranging from footwork to ballwork to plain power exercises.

Some guys practicing catching under the shade of some trees finally allowed me to get some faces through the helmets without blowing out the highlights.

This drill involved a tennis ball launching machine shooting balls at the players who then caught them in a variety of styles. I came a few inches from being hit in the noggin by a deflected ball (and they aren’t going very slow).

Finally, players slowly made their way back to the main field in preparation to once again run plays, but by then, it was time for me to jet.
With the varsity teams all preparing for the looming season, I am excited to get shooting these athletes doing what they do best.
